Aside from Katie McKenna who does well, there are no performances worth getting excited about here. However, a poor cast threaten to drag the movie into the expected doldrums. There’s some nice-looking gore and some well-shot sequences here. ![]() What is also an improvement is the production values, make-up, and effects. So, on the story front, Return of the Tooth Fairy is an improvement over the original. Something that looks to put a more definitive stamp on things and set up for another film in the series (which does exist). It’s a familiar angle to take and one that Return of the Tooth Fairy does well enough, up until the epilogue. What if, one of them, is the killer and using Corey as their means to an end? Return of the Tooth Fairy wants you to question Corey’s mindset, but also to wonder about the people around him. It helps push Return of the Tooth Fairy into more believable territories and keeps you guessing for a lot of its runtime. ![]() The idea that all of this might be nothing more than the murderous rampage of a traumatised individual is a good one. Is this all the delusions of a psychotic killer or is the tooth fairy actually real? As things start to go wrong, people go missing and the bodies pile up, questions start to be asked. Which also includes raising the tooth fairy with a spell book. Paul wants the truth and plans to get it out of Corey no matter what. Especially as Corey was the only survivor of the massacre. Paul’s cousin was killed by the tooth fairy and he thinks Corey was responsible. Unfortunately, for Corey though, one of those people, Paul (AJ Blackwell), has an ulterior motive for getting Corey to come along. The film blurs the lines between reality and fiction early on, it’s unclear if the tooth fairy is back or it’s all in his head.Ĭorey has issues, the trauma has made it hard for him to develop relationships, so when the opportunity to go to a college reunion at an old farmhouse comes along, he takes it. Set 20 years after the events of the first film, young Corey (now played by Jake Watkins) is all grown up but still suffering PTSD from the horrific events that occurred in his childhood. Once again directed by Louisa Warren and written by Tom Jolliffe, Return of the Tooth Fairy (aka Tooth Fairy 2/Tooth Fairy 2: The Root of Evil) stars Jake Watkins, Katie McKenna and AJ Blackwell. Surely, it can’t be as terrible as the first movie was, though? After all, the bar wasn’t exactly high. One year later, and it’s time for a sequel that absolutely no-one was asking for. A staggering bad horror where the only thing that stopped it getting the rare 0/10 score was one actor’s performance. Personally I'd happily recommend it.Directed by Louisa Warren, 2019’s Tooth Fairy (also known as Toof) was movie we called one of the worst movies of that year. I've enjoyed this film very much, yet I would understand viewers who'd find it lacking. All in all, like I've said, I have no complaints and no specific compliments. ![]() Who's ever made it a rule that Horror films had to be for adults only? The story here could have easily been suitable for today's children, so why plant this unnecessary adult content? Could have been just as good without it. What I didn't understand was the unnecessary use of semi-gore shots and nudity. The best thing here was the music, the main theme really was perfect for this kind of horror. The plot could have used a twist in my opinion, I always prefer twists in such films. The cast and acting, the screenplay and story, the cinematography, everything wasn't half bad nor exceptionally good. Like many other films that simply didn't shine, there's not much I could say about this one, for better or for worse. Therefore, I must have enjoyed it a lot more than the average viewer. Films like The Tooth Fairy are my favorite Horror sub-genre, a nice mixture of supernatural/ghosts/monsters with an "epic" legend for a background story. ![]() ![]() ![]() While re-watching Your Name for the 2nd (more likely 6th) time, I started to wonder why they didn’t go into more detail about Taki’s backstory. With that confirmation that both films take place in the same universe, one can’t help but wait until the next film.Your Name vs. These films feel like they are dedicated to the connections we make that can outlast even the most tragic events. These films serve as Shinkai’s love letter to our youth. Regardless of which film you prefer, one thing is clear. Hodaka knew the rain wouldn’t stop if he took Hina back from her sky, and the ending of the film showed that the world had to deal with the choice Hodaka made. ![]() Instead of the standard film ending where everything works out, the characters had to deal with the consequences of their actions. One thing Weathering With You does differently when compared to other animated films is the ending. We see the protagonists reunite and embrace each other, making it clear that they will be together in the future. When you compare it to Weathering With You, the ending is much more clear. While we see both protagonists find and remember each other, what happens after is subjective. In terms of plot, one criticism that Your Name had was the ending was a tad unclear. By including the main characters of Your Name, Shinkai confirms both films take place in the same universe. The main characters Taki Tachibana and Mitsuha Miyamizu were the reason the main character of Weathering With You, Hodaka Morishima, figured out what gift to get for Hina Amano’s birthday. There is a critical plot point within the film that lends credit to Your Name. If there would be one criticism, the main track for Your Name, Nandemonaiya, is more memorable than the main track of Weathering With You, Grand Escape. The music for both films fit the setting perfectly, as the main songs were written and performed by Japanese indie rock group RADWIMPS. One of the main plot devices in Weathering With You is the rain, and Shinkai showcases it beautifully. While the animation of Your Name still holds up, Weathering With You has something that Your Name seldom used: water animation. Makoto Shinkai has always been known for the beautiful imagery he creates with his films. However, the success of Weathering With You lends itself to the success of Your Name. While both films have their flaws as well as their outstanding moments, Weathering With You excels in areas that Your Name doesn’t reach as high. Now, four years later, Makoto Shinkai has once again found success with his newest masterpiece “Weathering With You.” Now Shinkai’s fanbase has been overtaken with the question: Which one is better” They will be joined by the original film’s producers, Toho, for Japan’s distribution. Abrams, Cloverfield, have signed on to be part of the film. Director Marc Webb, 500 Days of Summer, and producer J. Your Name has become so popular in fact, that the same year the film was shown in the United States, a live-action version was announced. The film was voted Favorite Anime Film of the Decade by fans for Funimation’s A Decade of Anime event. Even four years later, Your Name is still talked about throughout the Anime community. ![]() Reaching over $358 million, Your Name has reached international success, akin to the success of Studio Ghibli and Akira. Calling Makoto Shinkai’s 2016 film “Your Name” a global phenomenon would be an understatement, to say the least. ![]() ![]() The opening and closing repeats continuously in an ongoing interconversion between anomeric forms and is referred to as mutarotation (Latin mutare, meaning “to change”). You can start with a pure crystalline sample of glucose consisting entirely of either anomer, but as soon as the molecules dissolve in water, they open to form the carbonyl group and then re-close to form either the α or the β anomer. When the sample is dissolved in water, however, a mixture is soon produced containing both anomers as well as the straight-chain form, in dynamic equilibrium. The α form melts at 146☌ and has a specific rotation of +112°, while the β form melts at 150☌ and has a specific rotation of +18.7°. It is possible to obtain a sample of crystalline glucose in which all the molecules have the α structure or all have the β structure. The beta anomer is preferred because β -D-glucopyranose is the only aldohexose which can be drawn with all its bulky substituents (-OH and -CH 2OH) in equatorial positions, making it the most stable of the eight D-aldohexoses, which probably accounts for its widespread prevalence in nature. When D-glucose cyclizes it forms a 37/63 mixture of the alpha and beta anomer respectively. Also, the terminal -CH 2OH group is oriented up on the pyranose ring for D-sugars and down for L-Sugars. Groups which go to the right in a Fischer projection will be orientend 'down' of the pyranose ring while groups to the left are oriented 'up' in the chair structure. By convention the ring oxygen is placed to the right and to the rear of the structure (top right of the drawing). Pyranose rings are even capable of undergoing a ring flip to change between chair conformations. Pyranose rings are often drawn in a chair conformation like cyclohexane rings ( Section 4-6) with substituents being either an axial or equatorial position. Notice that for glucose and other aldohexoses the hydroxyl that forms the cyclic hemiacetal is also the one that determines the D/L designation of a sugar. The cyclic form of glucose is called glucopyranose. The pyranose ring is formed by attack of the hydroxyl on carbon 5 of glucose to the aldehyde carbon (carbon #1, also called the anomeric carbon in carbohydrate terminology). At equilibrium less than 1% of glucose is in an open chain form with the rest being almost exclusively in its cyclic pyranose form. The size of the cyclic hemiacetal ring adopted by a given sugar is not constant, but may vary with substituents and other structural features.Īldohexoses usually form pyranose rings and their pentose homologs tend to prefer the furanose form, but there are many counter examples. For most five- and six-carbon sugars, the cyclic forms predominate in equilibrium since they are more stable. Sugars are often shown in their open-chain form, however, in aqueous solution, glucose, fructose, and other sugars of five or six carbons rapidly interconvert between straight-chain and cyclic forms. Unlike most of the biochemical reactions you will see in this text, sugar cyclization reactions are not catalyzed by enzymes: they occur spontaneously and reversibly in aqueous solution. ![]() Cyclic structures of this kind are termed furanose (five-membered) or pyranose (six-membered), reflecting the ring size relationship to the common heterocyclic compounds furan and pyran shown below.įuran (5-membered ring) and pyran (6-membered ring) structures Five and six-membered rings are favored over other ring sizes because of their low angle and eclipsing strain. ![]() Molecules which have both an alcohol and a carbonyl can undergo an intramolecular version of the same reaction forming a cyclic hemiacetal.īecause sugars often contain alcohol and carbonyl functional groups, intramolecular hemiacetal formation is common in carbohydrate chemistry. In Section 19-10 it was discussed that the reaction of one equivalent of an alcohol, in the presence of an acid catalyst, adds reversibly to aldehydes and ketones to form a hydroxy ether called a hemiacetal (R 2COHOR') (h emi, Greek, half). ![]() ![]() The best thing to keep in mind is less is more, so thin layers of the product will result in a more natural, seamless look.
